“Mulan’s theme came quite easily and quickly,” he remembers.

Soon he was composing themes at the piano even though he hadn’t seen any footage. In fact, building the beat is how Gregson-Williams started - writing drum patterns for soldiers to play on-screen during the New Zealand shoot. Massive taiko drums are also heard throughout the score, along with various Chinese percussion instruments. He arranged for several Chinese soloists to fly to Bangkok, where longtime London colleague Richard Harvey (“an amazing ethnic flutist”) has a studio, to record music that would eventually be layered into the score.Īmong the unusual instruments heard in “Mulan” are the xiao, an end-blown bamboo flute dizi, a bamboo membrane flute guanzi, a woodwind of darker colors the pipa, a Chinese lute the guzheng, a plucked harp-like instrument and the erhu, a two-string bowed instrument. No stranger to films rooted in ancient times and locales, Gregson-Williams (“Prince of Persia,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Chronicles of Narnia”) understood that “cultural authenticity” meant finding the right Chinese sounds to flavor the score.

premiere but before the coronavirus pandemic thwarted release plans, Caro explained that she trusted Gregson-Williams (with whom she had worked on “The Zookeeper’s Wife”) to maintain the film’s “balance of cultural authenticity but also deliver the soundtrack for a really big global movie - a robust, muscular, adrenalized action movie also a deeply emotional movie.” This may not turn out to be a classic in the same way as THE LION KING and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, but I enjoyed it immensely.Three months later, in the wake of the L.A. The mountain scene contains some of the best animation I have seen from Disney, and the rousing score from maestro Jerry Goldsmith accompanies the action superbly. And the film's conclusion is as genuine and as heartfelt as any adaptation of this story. Eddie Murphy has managed to be as good, if not better, than Robin Williams as the comic sidekick. Not enough songs were present for my liking, but those that were fit perfectly with the story, and the chance to hear the wonderful voice of Lea Salonga (Mulan's songs) is worth the price of this film alone.

The characters were well thought out and expertly drawn. However, that said, I thought this film was wonderful. I was concerned about the absence of king-of-melody composer Alan Menken, whose wonderful songs encapsulate the charm of Disney. Also, this verge towards realism meant that the bad guy would not be as appealing - Disney villains are camp, over-the-top thespians by rule - Jeremy Irons in THE LION KING for example. These included the fairytale element - a cross-dressing Chinese soldier doesn't have the same magical appeal as, say, the son of the Greek gods searching for his birthright, etc etc. MULAN seemed to break most of my preconceived rules on Disney movies. Now I must admit I wasn't sure about this one.
